Who pays the utilities when everyone is away over the break?

Updated 2026-11-01

The situation comes from the same r/Roommates question (October 2026): the account holder asked whether they would end up paying if the house was empty for weeks over winter break. The amounts are a fictional bill run through the RoomProrate calculator on 1 November 2026.

A house uses power and gas even when nobody is home: the fridge, the router, standby devices and any heating left on. The question is not whether those weeks cost money, but who pays for them.

Worked example: everyone away for the same 13 days

Timeline: bill from December 15 to January 14, all four roommates away December 21 to January 2 Day 1 is December 15. 31 billed days All four Empty 18152230

A gas and electricity bill from 15 December to 14 January (31 days): fixed charge 31.00 and usage 248.00, which is 8.00 a day. Four roommates all leave on 21 December and come back on 3 January, so the house is empty for 13 days.

Gas and electricity 279.00 in total (fixed 31.00, usage 248.00)
AgreementEach roommateUnassigned
Break counted as living there69.750.00
Break left out, daily split43.75104.00
Break left out, person-days69.750.00

With the daily split, the 13 empty days (13 × 8.00 = 104.00) have nobody to share them, so the calculator shows them as unassigned instead of quietly adding them to someone. If the four share that 104.00 equally, each pays 26.00 more: 69.75 again. Person-days spreads the empty days over everyone automatically and gives the same 69.75.

So when everyone is away on the same days, leaving the break out changes nothing for anyone. It only matters if someone is expected to cover the empty days alone, or if people were away for different lengths of time.

When one person stays longer

Same bill, but Ari, the account holder, stays until 26 December and the others leave on 21 December. Now the house is empty for 7 days (27 December to 2 January).

Same bill, Ari stays six days longer
AgreementAriEach of the other threeUnassigned
Break left out, daily split91.7543.7556.00
Break left out, person-days84.0664.980.00
Break counted as living there69.7569.750.00

If you type this bill into the calculator yourself, a share that ties on rounding can come out 0.01 different, because the leftover cent goes by the calculator's internal order of people. The total does not change.

Leaving the break out now moves money towards the person who stayed. With the daily split there is still 56.00 for the empty days to agree on. Every row adds up to 279.00.

How to enter a break in the calculator

The calculator takes one stay per person. To leave a break out, add each person twice, once before the break with a last day and once after it with no last day, and tick only one row per person for the fixed charge. Add each person's two totals. The trip guide shows the same steps for one person.

Agree on the rule before the break, write it in your group chat, and use it for every break of the lease.

Questions

Does the account holder have to pay for the weeks the house is empty?

The supplier bills whoever holds the account, but how roommates share that bill is a household agreement. This page does not cover what a lease or local law requires. In the example, when all four are away on the same days, sharing the empty days equally gives the same 69.75 each as ignoring the break.

Why does leaving the break out not lower anyone's share?

When everyone leaves and returns on the same days, the cost of the empty days still has to be paid by someone. Shared equally, it brings every share back to the same amount. Leaving days out only moves money between people who were away for different lengths of time.
